George Darrieus Invention
By mounting curved aero-foil blades on a vertical rotated shaft or framework, French aeronautical engineer Georges Jean Marie Darrieus becomes the inventor of the eponymous Darrieus wind turbine. His design is filed for patent 1,835,018 in the United States on October 1, 1926.
1974
Sandia Research Started
R&D giant Sandia National Laboratories starts its first Darrieus wind turbine research activities in the US.
1983
Large Darrieus Deployment
FloWind, one of the largest Darrieus wind turbine operators, introduces the FloWind 17 wind turbine, followed two years later by the FloWind 19; by 1986, the company has a total installed capacity of 95 MW in California. By 1997, however, the energy output has started to decrease significantly, and the wind turbines are finally decommissioned in 2004.
1986
Large Diameter Research
Sandia begins exploring designs for a 34-metre diameter, 50-metre tall 400 kW turbine, concluding their research in 1992 and finally decommissioning the project in 1998. It is one of the largest studies into Darrieus wind turbines to date.
1992
FloWind Introduces EHD
FloWind introduces its Extended Height-to-Diameter (EHD) VAWT concept, with a diameter of 17 metres and an overall height of 47.3 metres. At 536m2, it doubles the rotor swept area of the FloWind 17 and increases the rotor weight to a total of 17.8 tonnes.
2015
New Disruptive Concept
Deviating from the original Darrieus design, inventor Valerii Nebesnyi implements three distinctive changes: converting the rotation axis from vertical to horizontal, removing the central column, and making the wings lighter, more flexible and more supported.
2016
Patent Granted
Valerii Nebesnyi files a patent for the invention on May 22, 2015, and is granted US Pat No 9,441,615 on September 13, 2016. The same year, small prototypes are built. It immediately becomes evident that these turbines are more light-weight than both traditional propeller-type turbines and the rigid vertical-axis Darrieus turbines.
2018
First Large TB-HAWT Is Built
The first large scale prototype of the dual-rotor Tensioned Blade Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (TB-HAWT) is built, with successful testing already underway.
TECHNOLOGY
Through cost-effective answers to traditional engineering questions, ANEM’s technology is leading the charge towards cheaper and cleaner energy.
Built upon innovative solutions to numerous engineering paradoxes, the technological development of the ANEM turbine is economically driven and technically sound. With many optimisation issues already successfully solved, though, this is just the start: there are new optimisation challenges on the horizon, with ANEM focused on achieving an energy source that offers lower overall costs than any existing fossil fuel.
ECO-FRIENDLY
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy production has increased significantly in the last 28 years, with annual growth rates between 1990 and 2003 rising steadily at a rate of 1.8%. However, between 2004 and 2016, the industry exploded, with the annual growth rate of 5.1% during this period exceeding the energy consumption growth rate of the entire planet! On a global scale, renewable energy is undeniably replacing traditional fossil fuel sources.

Increasing Market
Global energy consumption has been growing steadily for the last two decades, despite taking short-term hits during economic crises. In an ever-growing market, the opportunities to meet the increasing demand for renewable energy in particular are obvious.

Natural Power
Between 2013 and 2016, global CO2 emissions remained stable at around 31.5 GtCO2, but in 2017, a 2% rise was observed – a hike attributable to the annual replacement of electricity generators. In order to speed up the transition to green energy, cheaper technology is required in order to make this replacement turnaround quicker.
